Today is my birthday. I am 58 years old.
I’m going to let that sit there without apology, because 58 looks a hell of a lot better than I was told it would — and nothing gives me more satisfaction than proving a low expectation wrong.
What I will tell you is that I have decided — with great deliberation and zero guilt — to give myself some presents this year. Real ones. The kind you actually want.
First: time. I’m taking a blog vacation. Starting now, I’m stepping away from the weekly grind of turning my brain inside out for your reading pleasure three times a week. I’ll be back in early June — right around the 10th — rested, refilled, and probably with a backlog of opinions that have nowhere else to go.
Second: a slower pace. Not forever. Just for a few weeks. The kind of slow where you sit on the porch and don’t immediately turn the moment into content. Spend time just arting and reading.
Third: cake. Obviously cake. This is non-negotiable and I will not be elaborating.
Fourth — and this one matters — I’m letting today be a little bit sacred. Because today, May 14th, is also the second anniversary of the day my memoir, WHY, was published. Two years since I put the hardest, most honest thing I’d ever written out into the world and waited to see if anyone would catch it. You did. Many of you have. That gift keeps arriving, and I don’t take it lightly.
If you haven’t read it yet, today feels like the right day to fix that. You can grab a copy right here: Get WHY on Amazon or wherever books are sold :).
So here’s where we are: I’ve built a life I genuinely love, I’ve written a book I’m genuinely proud of, I have two fur-kids named Gigi & Eli who are genuinely ridiculous, and I have you — readers who show up week after week for whatever strange thing I’ve cooked up.
That’s not nothing. That’s everything.
While I’m on vacation, come hang out with me on social media — I’m @rrscobey on Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky. I can’t promise I’ll be profound, but I can promise I’ll be entertaining.
Take care of yourselves while I’m gone. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do — and if you do, text/DM me if it is really juicy tea.
See you around June 10th.
— Randy
